Greeting to you from Trujillo Peru! I have returned for another visit. As always it will be a busy one including a teaching session.
I taught my class on the Holy Spirit today, Saturday the 2nd of October.
The title of the class is "The Wind in Our Sails. This is a much needed class here in South America. Jimmy Swaggert and Benny Hinn have caused a lot of confusion here (among others). The class was well received.
We had a great turn out even though this weekend is election time here in Peru. On election weekend all places serving or selling alcohol are closed by law. And you will find this interesting, no public meetings or gatherings can be held. The election is on Sunday and is the main focus for the country at all levels.
During the sessions on Saturdays they have started having praise times, and include an offering and the Lord's Supper in as much as this is one of the larger gatherings of the church we are building here in Trujillo.
At the moment of the Lord's Supper a woman by the name of Carmen went forward. She is the janitor at our offices. I assumed she was going to share something about the Lord's Supper. She had no Bible. It is not very common in most of our churches in the States to have a women say something at the Lord's Supper. Carmen became a Christian along with her daughter a couple years ago through our team. As I was trying to figure out what she was doing she started talking about the Lord's Supper and she arrived at a point when she quoted from memory 1 Corinthians 11:23-26:
(23) I have already told you what the Lord Jesus did on the night he was betrayed. And it came from the Lord himself. He took some bread in his hands.
(24) Then after he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is given for you. Eat this and remember me."
(25) After the meal, Jesus took a cup of wine in his hands and said, "This is my blood, and with it God makes his new agreement with you. Drink this and remember me."
(26) The Lord meant that when you eat this bread and drink from this cup, you tell about his death until he comes.
She had memorized that common passage. I was blown away. This was SO important to her, a women, our janitor, a new Christian, that she had memorized it. I was sitting there amazed, trying to recall the last time I had heard anyone in the States, usually a man, quote it from memory.
Maybe I had seen it, maybe not. I don't remember it. I'm sure some leader, somewhere has. I haven't. It amazed me. I thanked God for Carmen. She put me to shame. I'm so proud of these who are coming to Christ here. They are so sincere and committed. I'm so grateful for our supporters who are making this possible, and for our team here working hard to carry out the great commission. Maybe we take too many things for granted.
Carmen, our janitor taught me a number of lessons today. About Jesus, about commitment, about a number of things!
Thank you Jesus! Thank you Carmen!
God Bless!
